Understanding the importance of education in the lives of our refugee and newcomer communities, PRSG offers support services to help these communities access opportunities which align with their individualized education and/or career goals. These services include support for all ages - children, youth and adults - who have goals or needs related to both academic and professional achievement.
Adult English Language TutoringPRSG offers private tutoring sessions for refugees and asylum seekers looking to develop their English language skills. Our amazing group of volunteer tutors provide English lessons at the student's home, public area (e.g. a nearby park or library), at PRSG's work office, or virtually. These lessons are individually tailored to meet the needs of each student, depending on their self-identified goals for learning English. These lessons can be geared for English learners at any level, and they can focus on any skills the student feels they need the most support with, such as speaking, listening, reading and/or writing. We offer a variety of material and resources for our tutors to provide engaging ELL activities and lessons.

K-12 Academic TutoringWith the support from local schools, PRSG offers tutoring sessions to support children and youth with their academic achievement. These sessions could range from offering weekly homework support to working on specific subjects that the student is currently struggling with. They may occur at the student's home, virtually or, in some cases, at the student's school (during or after school hours). Our dedicated group of volunteer tutors work closely with PRSG's Education Coordinator, parents, and teachers to offer the most effective tutoring sessions for students, with the ultimate goal of providing both academic and social support for students as they continue through their academic journeys.

Credential Evaluations

Many newcomers to the United States have arrived here with degrees and other higher education credentials they earned in their home countries. Because these degrees were not obtained in the U.S., we have seen a significant barrier that exists when these individuals attempt to find work in their field of study, many times being forced to work in jobs that are unrelated to their chosen career path. In order to help bridge this gap, PRSG is partnering with World Education Services (WES), a non-profit organization that conducts credential evaluations of international degrees. As an official referral partner of WES, we offer individualized guidance sessions and long-term support for those needing their international credentials evaluated and recognized in the United States. This service includes a pre-screening meeting to discuss the individual's education background and career goals, support with submitting their credential evaluation applications, and follow-up guidance sessions to help them effectively use their evaluation reports to find employment or continue their education.
Professional Education ServicesPRSG works with individuals needing navigation support services for various career pathway programs, classes, and trainings. We offer one-one-one guidance sessions with individuals to discuss their goals, conduct research to identify trainings and programs that align with those goals, and provide guidance during their application and registration process. This service also includes support with FAFSA applications as well as GED and TOEFL exam registration. Our ultimate goal with this service is to ensure that refugee and asylum seeker communities are overcoming the barriers they face when attempting to take steps in their education to fulfill their career and employment goals.

Summer Reading ProgramDuring the summer season, PRSG's Community Classroom offers a month-long reading program for K-12th grade refugee students. The goal of this program is to encourage enthusiastic readers while school is out for the summer. This program includes weekly meetings with our dedicated and experienced teachers where students will engage in interactive reading activities. These activities are also accompanied by pre/post-reading arts and crafts and creative writing exercises. Throughout the program, students and teachers will also engage in social events around the community as well as participate in an end-of-program field trip! Stay tuned for information about our next summer reading program, or reach out directly to our education coordinator, Megan French, at megan@pdxrsg.org with questions.
